“Elegant Funk”ってそもそもなんぞや、というところが気になるところかと思いますが、Disco、Boogie、Modern Funkなど、電子音が入ってきたあたり、80年代以降のブラックミュージック、その中でも煌びやかな印象がある曲、でしょうか。MURO氏の影響力により、もはや”Elegant Funk” という言葉が定着して、それ自体がジャンルとして認知されているような気もします。 内容としては、Sammy Barbot “Music Harmony And Rhythm with Brazilian Rhyme” から、Elegant Funkの象徴とも言えるDayton “The Sound of Music (European Mix)”への繋ぎあたりがハイライトでしょうか。 最後を飾るBah Samba “Let The Drum Speak” feat. The Fatback Band も新旧アーティストの共演とメロディーが相まってラストチューンって感じでとてもいいです。 こちらは初回リリース盤。再発盤は紙ジャケットでリリースされています。個人的には、シリーズもので途中でリリースのフォーマットが変わると収納しにくい（並べにくい）のでできれば統一頂きたいところです。 ————————————————————— I suppose the first question is, “What exactly is ‘Elegant Funk’?” If we trace it back, it probably refers to the branch of Black music from the 80s onward—Disco, Boogie, Modern Funk and so on—where electronic sounds began to come into play, particularly the tracks that have a glamorous, sparkling feel. According to the influence of MURO himself, the word of “Elegant Funk” has taken root to the point that it feels like it’s recognized as its own genre. As for the content, mix from Sammy Barbot’s “Music Harmony And Rhythm with Brazilian Rhyme” to Dayton’s “The Sound of Music (European Mix)”—a track that could be called the very symbol of Elegant Funk—is probably the highlight. The closing track, Bah Samba’s “Let The Drum Speak” feat. The Fatback Band, also works beautifully as the finale, with the collaboration of old and new artists blending together with the great melody. This is the first edition release. DJ KENTA氏がGreen Angleという2017年に閉店してしまったセレクトショップからリリースしていた “green angle SOUNDTRACK” シリーズ。 収録曲は、いわゆるDisco、Boogieの新譜、エディット物を中心に構成されています。BPMも早め。 MURO氏の影響で「Elegant Funk」、Dam-FunkやXL Middletonあたりは「Modern Funk」なんて言ったりもするでしょうか。 もはや改めて言及する必要もないとは思いますが、さすがDJ KENTA氏、ミックスは超絶タイトでスムーズです。 個人的なハイライトは、Mohawks ”The Champ”や Donald Byrd “Think Twice”などの大ネタマッシュアップ作品である、Soul Source Production箭内健一氏が手がけるユニット、Slow Motion Replay の “Think Better” でしょうか。 ジャケットは、皆さんご存知のDiscoのレコードをリリースしていた Prelude Records のコースターをサンプリングされています。 ———————————————————— The “green angle SOUNDTRACK” series was released by DJ KENTA through Green Angle, a select shop that sadly closed in 2017. The tracks included in the series mainly consist of new releases and edits in the Disco and Boogie genres, with relatively high BPMs. Influenced by DJ MURO, some might describe it as “Elegant Funk,” while others, referring to artists like Dam-Funk and XL Middleton, might call it “Modern Funk.” There’s really no need to say it at this point, but as expected from DJ KENTA, the mix is incredibly tight and smooth. For me, highlights would be “Think Better” by Slow Motion Replay — a unit led by Kenichi Yanai from Soul Source Production.
